The History of the Tournament

The Freddy Adams Sports Tournament is not just about sports. It is about life. And dreams. And education. And getting involved. It is about making a difference in the lives of our children. This three day sports event began in the summer of 1993 in response to the murder of Freddy Adams.

Each August the Freddy Adams Sports Tournament awards scholarships to six eighth grade students. The students are rewarded for their academic achievement and commitment to keeping peace on the streets of their community. The scholarships are funded by the Tournament.

The tournament features mens', youth, and womens' soccer; mens' and womens' softball; mens' and youth hockey; and the 3 on 3 basketball challenge for men, women and youth. The first Sports Tournament featured about three dozen teams competing in mens' softball and 3 on 3 basketball. Most of those teams came from Fishtown.

In 2007, over 400 teams competed in the four sports and over 5000 spectators spent part if not all of their weekend cheering on their favorite team. Participants have traveled from North Carolina, New York, New Jersey, and Delaware, as well as every neighborhood in Philadelphia and the suburbs.
